Shaving Intimate Areas: How to Remove or Trim Pubic Hair, Precautions, Tips

Shaving your intimate areas is a very personal decision. There may be a variety of reasons like a personal sense of hygiene, more confidence for intimate times or just wanting to look hair-free. Whatever your reason is, remember that it is absolutely not essential to shave or remove your pubic hair.

But, if you still choose to do so, make sure you have prepared your skin properly and taken necessary precautions to avoid any unpleasant outcome.

But, why do you think you have pubic hair in the first place?

There are a number of reasons why human beings have pubic hair.

  • To prevent the entry of dirt and dust - The intimate regions need extra protection against dirt and dust since they are more delicate. Pubic hair acts as a barrier to their entry, thereby protecting your intimate areas.
  • To reduce friction during sex - Due to being delicate, the pubic area is more prone to chafing from friction, which is present a lot during sex. Pubic hair reduces this friction and provides added cushioning.
  • To trap pheromones - There is a theory that the vast number of hair follicles in your pubes also produce pheromones, the human sexual chemicals that send subconscious messages to other humans and animals in order to find a potential mate. These are then trapped by the hair down there and aid in signaling that one has reached sexual maturity.

Preparing the skin for shaving

So, if you have decided to shave, make sure your skin is prepared. This will give you better results and a smoother shave.

  • Soak in warm water and mild cleanser - Before attempting to shave, soak your intimate region in warm water for a few minutes to soften the skin and hair. This will make shaving easier and smoother. Use a mild cleanser like the Carmesi Intimate Cleanser to remove any dirt and impurities, so as to ward off the risk of infections.
  • Gently exfoliate - Some people are more prone to ingrown hair. Exfoliating with a mild scrub can remove the buildup of dead cells and bring out the trapped hair. This will make for a cleaner shave.
  • Use a moisturizing shaving cream - Shaving cream is a very important part of having a safe and smooth intimate shave. Use a non-scented shaving cream that has moisturizing properties and ingredients like olive oil, coconut oil, shea butter, etc. This will provide a protective layer for the razor to glide smoothly on, leaving fewer chances of cuts and irritation.

Shaving the intimate area

After you have prepared your skin, you can move on to shaving.

  • Choose the right razor - It is very important to choose the right razor for shaving. Use a good quality razor that is neither too dull nor too sharp with a firm grip for best results. Also, look for a razor with fewer blades. This will minimize the chances of cuts by reducing friction.
  • Shave in the direction of hair growth - While shaving, always remember to shave in one particular direction for the best results in fewer strokes. When choosing a direction of shaving, keep it in the direction of hair growth. This will prevent ingrown hair and razor burns.
  • Rinse the razor after each stroke - Make sure to rinse the razor after every stroke so as to unclog the razor mouth and ensure it is effective. Do this to minimize the number of strokes you would otherwise require with a clogged razor.
  • Soothe your skin after shaving - Always wash the area thoroughly after shaving and apply some soothing oil or aloe vera gel to prevent irritation. Your skin remains extra sensitive after shaving and this will instantly soothe it and prevent any rashes from occurring.
  • Don’t forget to moisturize - Your skin usually becomes dry after shaving. Use an unscented moisturizer on the intimate region after you’re done to prevent any irritation or dryness.

Precautions to take when shaving

There are a few things that you should keep in mind while shaving. These precautions will ensure you have the best and safest shaving experience.

  • Always use a clean rust-free blade - It is always advisable to check the razor blade before shaving for cleanliness and rust. Otherwise, you run the risk of infections which can become quite unpleasant in the intimate region. Preferably use a new blade after every few shaves.
  • Don’t use a razor that’s too dull or too sharp - Watch out for the sharpness of the blade. If it’s too dull, you will require more strokes than necessary, thus increasing the friction and chances of chafing. And, if the blade is too sharp, then you have a high risk of cutting yourself. Use a blade with optimum sharpness.
  • Don’t shave dry - Always wet your intimate region before shaving down there to soften the hair and reduce friction. Dry shaving will cause unnecessary irritation and cause cuts and razor burns.
  • Don’t run the razor on the same area more than twice - Using an optimally sharp blade is beneficial as you won’t require more than two strokes. If you run the razor on the same area repeatedly, you can get cuts or razor burns.
  • Trim your hair first - If your pubic hair is too long, consider trimming it first before directly jumping into shaving. This will give a cleaner and more effective shave, while not getting the blade clogged.
  • Never shave in the opposite direction of hair growth - Never shave in the direction opposite of hair growth. This will irritate the skin and increase the chances of razor burns and ingrown hair.

  • Don’t shave on existing bumps - If you have existing bumps in your intimate area, do not shave on them. The blade can cause cuts on them, which can get infected. Shave around the bumps and gently exfoliate to get rid of them.
