Punctuality is not my strongest trait. I can recount multiple incidents where my harrowed friends have missed the beginnings of movies, or held a seat for me at a fast-filling restaurant because I was ‘running a little behind’. And so I am usually quite forgiving if left waiting in the lobby. But if my Periods don’t show up on time, all hell breaks loose.
Most women experience irregular periods at some point or the other in their lives. But it’s not always a cause for alarm. Let’s explore what cause irregular periods and how to get the timing right!
What are irregular periods?
A regular menstrual cycle usually lasts for 28 days. A plus or minus seven days is still considered normal. Your periods are irregular, if:
- Your cycle is prolonged for more than 8 days
- You missed a month completely
- You have never been late before
What causes irregular periods?
Hormonal Imbalance is the most common cause of irregular periods. But that’s not all. Certain lifestyle and medicinal conditions can also cause your periods to arrive after its ETA. Such as:
In this busy lifestyle, women often deal with short-term anxiety issues and chronic stress. Both these problems can easily lead to hormone imbalance which can further cause irregular periods or missed cycles.
- Excessive exercising or dieting
Yes, you read that right. Exercise is a must to keep your body fit and flexible. But too much of exercising can change the schedule of your menstrual cycle. Women who are underweight or suffer from eating disorders can also develop irregular cycles.
Note: It is very common for athletes to miss their periods as their lives revolve around constant workouts.
Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome, also known as PCOS, is a very common medical condition that can cause irregular periods. In this condition, tiny cysts form around the ovaries which can obstruct regular ovulation. PCOs can also lead to Diabetes and heart diseases.
Teenage girls who have just attained puberty might not experience regular periods. It takes time for the body to get accustomed to this new phenomenon, so don’t panic. Pre-menopausal women may also face irregular periods and a significant change in their flow.

If you are a woman in her mid-forties and suffer from irregular periods, it is advisable to get a Thyroid and Diabetes check-up done. Conditions like STDs, Endometriosis, and Fibroids etc. can also cause irregular periods.
What can you do?
Reduce body fat through diets and exercise, but remember not to over-do it.

- Eat a healthy diet
Get rid of your secret stash of chocolates and chips. Eating a protein rich diet and shunning sugary and processed foods will keep your body lighter and happier.

Every woman has a different body structure. And so, period cycles and behaviours also vary from woman to woman. Keep a note of your cycle and your flow. If the irregularities continue for a longer duration of time, consult your gynecologist without any delay. Use sanitary products that are natural and do not contain harmful chemicals or synthetics which harm your body.
Because periods are not to be taken lightly. Be aware, be informed and be safe. It matters. Period.
