Bikini Wax at Home: Should You, Or Shouldn't You? - A Complete Guide

What is bikini wax?

Shaving your pubes is a quick and easy option for hair removal down there, but if not done effectively, it can potentially lead to razor burns and ingrown hair. Also, if you’re not careful, you may end up cutting yourself and the effects also last for a short period of time.

A good alternative to get a smoother bikini area is to have a bikini wax. It can be done either at a salon, or performed at home, but is a relatively painful method of hair removal. In it, you wax your bikini area either with liquid wax or a waxing strip and get whatever kind of bikini wax you are comfortable with.

What are the types of bikini waxes?

Bikini waxes are generally of three types and you can opt for any depending on your needs:

  • Regular bikini wax - In it, you only get rid of the pubic hair that grows on the sides of your bikini line. This is perfect if you just want to get one to wear a swimsuit that is not too revealing at the bottom.
  • Brazilian bikini wax - Go for a Brazilian wax if you want completely naked pubes that are hairless from all areas.
  • Full bikini wax - This is where you get rid of the hair from the vulval area and the upper lips of your pubes but leave a triangle-shaped turf in the middle. You can opt for this one if you are planning to wear a swimsuit that is more revealing down there.

Is it a good idea to try getting one at home?

Even though it can appear tricky at first, it is perfectly okay to opt for a bikini wax at home. You just need to prepare beforehand and know what to expect in order to get it successfully done yourself.

Also, if you are someone who is not comfortable with revealing your intimate area to a third person at the salon, then considering doing it yourself in the comfort of your own house is a great option for you.

So, how should you go about it?

Just follow these simple steps to get a successful bikini wax at home:

  • Let the hair grow out - It is difficult to wax very short hair. So, if you currently have shaved pubes, wait for the hair to grow out at least a quarter-inch long for a successful wax.

  • Avoid waxing around your period - Your pubic area is generally more sensitive when you are menstruating. A bikini wax can be more painful than waxing other areas of your body because the skin down there is more delicate, and doing it on your period can just make the whole experience more painful. So, opt for a time when you are not bleeding or going to in order for the session to be less traumatic.
  • Exfoliate - It is possible to get ingrown hair with both waxing and shaving, especially if your hair is more on the coarser side down south. Exfoliating both before and after your waxing session can lessen the chances of getting ingrown hair.
  • Take a hot shower - Before waxing your bikini area, consider taking a warm shower to soften the hair. This will make the hair removal process much easier and less painful.
  • Use a good quality wax strip - If you are doing it at home, make sure to use a good quality wax strip that is specially designed for the bikini area. This will ensure that you do not end up irritating the skin and getting unwanted reactions.
  • Apply aloe vera gel to soothe the area - After you are done waxing, use aloe vera gel to soothe the area and lessen the burning sensation and pain.

  • Opt for comfortable clothing - Do not wear synthetic or tight underwear immediately after a bikini wax. This can irritate the skin and cause ingrown hair and so, instead, opt for loose, cotton underwear that is comfortable and will not irritate the skin.
