What do you mean by libido?
Your libido refers to your sex drive or sexual desire and dictates how frequently you feel like engaging in sexual activities. Everyone has a different libido, but on average, your libido will gradually decline as you age.
But, a lot of factors come into play while regulating your sex drive, namely, hormones, medication, your lifestyle choices and your physical or mental health.
What are the probable reasons for low female libido?
There can be a number of factors resulting in lowered sex drive in females and these can include:
- Lifestyle choices - If you partake in too much drinking or smoking, it can interfere with your system and cause your libido to become lowered. Smoking is known to decrease your blood flow, leading to lowered arousal.
- Medication - Certain medications like antidepressants can contribute to a lowered sex drive.
- Menopause - During menopause, your estrogen levels drop, causing vaginal dryness and lowered libido. Even though not all women experience a lowered sex drive, some people can experience low desire and painful sex due to dry vaginal tissues. But, sex after menopause is very much possible if you follow a few things.
- Pregnancy and breastfeeding - Hormonal changes during pregnancy and breastfeeding can cause you to experience low arousal levels. Even after the baby comes, adjusting to the new schedule can leave you tired and with little desire to make room for sex.
- Mental health issues - Anxiety, depression or other mental health issues can make your sex drive take a hit temporarily or for a prolonged period. If you have been diagnosed and undergoing treatment, you can be too preoccupied with that and have less time to devote to intimacy.
Physical problems - Sometimes you may experience physical problems like vaginismus or other problems leading to painful or uncomfortable sex, which can cause you to experience lowered sex drive. If you have recently undergone surgery, the pain and discomfort can also make you least aroused.
What can you do about it?
You may be recently experiencing lowered libido or can naturally have a low sex drive. But either way, you can try the following tips to boost your sex life:
- Try aphrodisiacs - There are certain foods that are known to boost your libido and are known as aphrodisiacs. There are several of these that can boost sex drive in females and many are backed by science to have proven benefits due to certain components in them. You can try foods ranging from warm spices, asparagus, dates etc. and see if they work for you. You can also try incorporating aphrodisiac essential oils that can help boost your mood.
- Resolve mental health issues - If you are suffering from mental health problems, it is very important to get them addressed and not just for the sake of your libido. Get professional help in the form of counselling and medications, if required, and know that it is completely okay to seek help.
- Address your physical problems - If you are dealing with recovery after surgery, then give your body time to heal and once it feels fine, you will start to feel your normal sex drive again. But, if you are up against issues like vaginismus, you should consult a doctor and get yourself treated as otherwise, you won’t be able to enjoy sex as much.
- Communicate with your partner - If you believe that your lowered sex drive has something to do with your emotional disconnect with your partner, then you should communicate with your partner and talk about the issue and address them before seeing an improvement in your libido.
- Exercise daily - Try to get involved in regular exercise to improve your stamina, body image and mood. Exercising can even regulate your hormones and a combined effect will help in boosting your libido.
- Spice up your sex life - Sometimes when you have been in a relationship or marriage for a long time, your sex life can become monotonous and your libido can take a hit. Try investing in some bedroom products that can help in spicing up your sex life and pushing your libido back up.
Improve your sleep cycle - Feeling fatigued can often leave you not in the mood for sex, but a busy schedule means that it’s not always possible to clock in straight hours. Try taking naps whenever possible to avoid feeling exhausted and try going to bed early so that you get adequate sleep.
