Understanding Period Sex

Can a woman indulge in sex during periods? While many people may have you believe that sex during periods isn’t right, but on the contrary, it’s absolutely safe. And, unless you are squeamish at the sight of blood, there is nothing wrong with sex during periods.

Now that we are done with the question of whether it is safe to have sex in periods, and that it is absolutely normal and even fun, be aware that having sex during your periods does not mean that you cannot get pregnant. Therefore, remember to use protection while having sex during periods as during this time, one is more vulnerable to sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and pregnancy is also a possibility. Make sure that you use birth control to stay protected from unwanted pregnancy. Having cleared that, lets let’s look at some of the benefits of sex during periods.

  • Extra lubrication
  • Apparently, menstrual fluid can actually act as a great lubricant not just for you but for your partner as well, while indulging in penetrative intercourse!

  • Cramp relief
  • We trust you know that menstrual cramps are the absolute worst! They hurt a lot and we usually end up taking pain killers for something so natural. But no more! Period sex can help relieve those menstrual cramps as orgasms help in relieving the muscles that contract during cramps.

  • Shorter periods
  • Who knew there was a way to reduce the time frame of your periods? Well, since orgasms help in the contraction and relaxation of the uterine walls, the inner lining of these walls that shed during our menstrual cycle get hurled out faster. The faster the lining clears out, the shorter your period.

  • Lesser headaches
  • Studies have shown that periods can cause migraine headaches in women owing to the drop in estrogen levels. But there’s good news for those of you who want to try period sex. Many women who tried sex on their period say that it relieves them of their migraines.

  • It’s fun
  • Periods causes hormonal fluctuations and may increase your sex drive more than other times of the month. Therefore, make the most of this increased sex drive and enjoy with your partner.

Having given the green signal, it is obvious that doing the deed when Aunt Flo is visiting comes with its own set of warning signs. So, let’s look at some of the things you should be careful of, if you are having sex on your periods:

    1. Be open and talk to your partner about this. Honesty is the best policy there is and if you want to get intimate during periods, let them know what to expect.
    2. If you do decide to go ahead, use a towel. No one likes stains and using a towel is the best way to prevent that from happening.
    3. Always make sure you have removed the tampons or menstrual cups before having sex. A forgotten tampon can lodge up further in your vagina, and may lead to Toxic Shock Syndrome (TSS).

Don’t let your period put a stop to your sex life. By taking some precautions, you can even enjoy sex while on your periods. I mean, it’s just blood, don't be a prude about it. And who knows, maybe it will find a way of surprising you.
