How do we track Ovulation? Ovulation Predictor

The process of ovulations means the release of an egg from the ovary (the female reproductive organ) which may or may not be fertilized by a sperm. If the process of fertilization takes place, it results in pregnancy. However, if fertilization does not occur, the egg disintegrates and the uterine lining is shed during the menstrual cycle.

For you to understand ovulation, you should know how the phases of menstrual cycle works. Typically, ovulation occurs during the 14th day of the menstrual cycle or occurs 4 days before or after the midpoint of one’s cycle and can last up to 3 - 6 days. It’s the best time to get pregnant and therefore, this short period of time is also known as a woman’s “fertility window”.

Ovulation symptoms

An ovulatory cycle can be associated with certain symptoms such as:

  • light bleeding or spotting,
  • tenderness in the breasts,
  • increased sexual drive and a dull, mild, cramp-like pain in the ovaries, towards one side of the abdomen. This sensation is supposed to work as a sign that a woman is ready for fertilization and is ovulating.

One thing to remember is that these ovulation symptoms are not experienced by everyone and are considered secondary in tracking one’s fertility.

How to Track ovulation ?

Irrespective of whether your periods are irregular, ovulation will happen on the 14th day of your menstrual cycle. What’s important for you to know is how long your menstrual cycle lasts. If you know your average menstrual cycle length, you can work out when you will ovulate, given that ovulation occurs 14 days before your periods start. On the basis of this information, you can monitor and track your ovulation by yourself, just by keeping a few things in mind.

  • If your menstrual cycle is 28-day-long, ovulation will happen around day 14. So, you would be most fertile on Day 12, 13 and 14.
  • If your menstrual cycle is 30-day-long, ovulation will happen around day 15. So, you would be most fertile on Day 15, 16 and 17.
  • If your menstrual cycle is 21-day-long, ovulation will happen around day 7. So, you would be most fertile on Day 5, 6 and 7.

However, if you are not comfortable keeping track of your periods, worry not, for there are other ways by which you can keep track of your ovulation cycle.

  • Basal Body Temperature Charting: Apparently, there is a 2 - 3 degree rise in a woman’s temperature when she is ovulating for at least 3 days. So, you can track your ovulation merely by keeping a tab of your temperature every day, after the start of your cycle.
  • Ovulation Calculator: There are a number of apps and calculators available online and in the market and they help track your ovulation cycle, on a monthly basis. They are created and track your ovulation on the basis of the length of your menstrual cycle.
  • Ovulation Predictor Kit: These are kits available in pharmacies and medical stores and help detect a surge in the LH hormone in the urine, which can detect ovulation. The test shows a dark line similar to the one scene in a pregnancy test and has 97 percent efficacy rate.

Not only does it help to know when a woman is at her ovulating best, in order for her to get pregnant, but if one wants to avoid pregnancy too, its advised that one practices safe sex, usually in the week or two after ovulation, as it is believed that the sperm can remain in the uterus for up to 5 days.

Another thing that most women experience during ovulation is in the form of a stretchy, white discharge from the vagina, which gives a moist and wet feeling throughout the day. The perfect way to prevent this discomfort is to use panty liners. Carmesi panty liners have a plant-based top-sheet, which makes them rash-free and naturally soft. They are chlorine and irritant free and are so light you won’t even feel that you are wearing a panty liner. Add them to your shopping basket to experience a hassle-free ovulation!
