8 Natural Tips for Winter Skin Care

Winter is here – the time when layering like a Panda and downing huge mugs of hot chocolate is considered legitimate. While you may feel thrilled upon its arrival, your skin dreads this season the most. Why, you ask? Because this harsh weather robs all the moisture from your skin and that means a whole lot of dryness and itchiness. If you are someone who already has sensitive skin, then you need to give it some extra TLC!

It might seem like a daunting task but achieving that winter glow is no Rocket Science. Here are a few simple tips for winter skin care (we’ve always got your back).

Wash your face with lukewarm water

We know, the thought of winter and long hot showers just makes life better! While your sore muscles feel happy post a hot bath, your skin feels stressed. After all, hot water makes it all dry and flaky, more so, if it’s your facial skin! Now, it’s not that you can switch to cold water in winter, but make sure you go for lukewarm baths. This will prevent natural oils from sloughing away, the easiest step to natural skin care!

Moisturise

Moisturising is the buzzword for winter, and rightly so! This is the little secret to getting that winter glow. When you slather a dollop of that cream, the moisture in your skin gets restored. While it’s simpler to pick those fancy cosmetics in the supermarket, try getting hold of natural moisturisers like coconut oil, castor oil, or buttermilk! Besides, before you go in for a lukewarm bath, massage your body with some oil, since it acts like a barrier and keeps the moisture in your skin intact.

Drink away to glory

Yes, you heard it right – drink as much water as you can in winter. Unlike summer, our throats do not feel parched and it is not instinctive enough to reach out for that glass of H2O. Please do your skin a favour and keep yourself hydrated as much as possible.

Use gentle products

This is a key rule for good skin all year, but more so in winter! Use a gentle body wash that does not strip away moisture from your skin. For your face, try using products with ceramides and glycerine to repair and protect your skin’s moisture barrier.  If you can go for home remedies, that’s even better!

Don’t step outdoors with damp skin

There are times when we thoughtlessly go out with damp skin, either to run errands or even a short walk. Do not commit this crime, because your skin will chap even more. Wait till your skin dries, slather on a protective layer of moisturiser, and then step outdoors!

Exfoliate less

Exfoliation is beneficial, but not when done in excess. If your skin is dry, it is better to avoid exfoliation, but even if you have normal skin, don’t do it all the time! Doing it once a week is good enough.

Shield your skin

Cover your skin as much as you can – wrap yourself in scarves and jackets, wear gloves and caps or any other protective gear to guard yourself from cold winds, rain or snow. Do not forget to use sunscreen in winter, because that’s the biggest reason for skin damage.

Nourish your body inside out

You can use all kinds of cosmetics, but if you aren’t nourishing your body properly, it’s a lost cause. Consume foods rich in water content, including apples, oranges, kiwi, celery, tomatoes, cucumbers, and carrots. Get your daily fix of Vitamin C and Zinc to promote the production of collagen and elastin. At the same time, don’t neglect Omega-3, which is found in fatty fish and flaxseeds.

Make sure you follow these tips this winter to get that healthy glow. Every little step you take leads you to that peachy flush!
