Sustainable is Attainable

Sustainable is Attainable

From wildfires spreading across North California and Australia to the coronavirus pandemic, the events of last year plunged the world into a hellhole, forcing us to think about sustainable practices as the only way to seek redemption for our past deeds. As far as choosing a sustainable lifestyle is concerned, a practice that we must shun is single-use plastic, which is an ecological hazard and something that we all consume without second thought. Whether it is the shampoo bottle, chocolate wrapper or your pads and tampon, everything has an element of plastic and we must be careful about how we choose our products. Till a few years ago, the process of what goes into the making of a pad was not talked about in the open, given that discussing menstruation was a taboo and still remains so in many parts of the country. But now, with more women speaking about menstruation freely, the harm that these disposables can cause to the planet is finally being reviewed openly.

From using cloth pads to the widespread use of sanitary napkins in the 19th century, women have experienced significant changes in how they manage menstruation. In recent times, it has been observed that using sanitary napkins can create more waste than the Earth can handle. This is so because the pads are made of synthetic material that is non-biodegradable, which means that these napkins will stay in our topsoil for thousands of years, thereby polluting our environment. In light of these facts, it's menstrual cups, eco-friendly tampons, and biodegradable or reusable sanitary pads that are the solution. But a question you may ask is, whether it is worth the switch?

On an average, any person who menstruates for an average of 40 years generates up to 200 kg of menstrual waste. This poses a threat to the environment with respect to waste generation and disposal. An average woman uses 11,000 disposable menstrual products in her lifetime and around 85% admit to choosing an environmentally harmful method. In India, 1,13,000 tonnes of menstrual waste is generated on an annual level. Apart from its detrimental effect on the environment, menstrual pads are synthetic products made from plastic, which can enter the bloodstream and cause various infections.

Sustainable Menstruation refers to the use of environment-friendly and responsible products to combat what otherwise could be an environmental challenge in the future. In such a case, it’s the right time to make the switch to sustainable and reusable products.

Menstrual Cups: From a sustainability perspective, menstrual cups are a no-brainer. Rather than using, changing and throwing sanitary napkins every 4-5 hours, just rinsing and reinserting a menstrual cup is a far more sustainable solution for all your period problems. This soft, silicone cup is simple to insert and once bought, it can be used for at least 10 years. This is comparatively cheaper to tampons and pads because those tend to be a monthly investment. Carmesi Menstrual Cup promises a soft and comfortable insertion and removal. It has been tested for no cytotoxicity, no sensitization, and no irritation with an FDA and gynaecology approval. It has no dyes, no perfumes, or toxic chemicals and is made up from 100 % biocompatible medical grade silicone.

Eco-Friendly Sanitary Pads: There’s some suspicion and trepidation even now when it comes to using menstrual cups and some women still prefer using pads. But if the idea of using single use plastic gives you the creeps, Carmesi Eco-conscious Sanitary Pad is what you are looking for!

These are sanitary pads that are made keeping a litter-free future in mind. They have a plant-based composition and are naturally soft and rash-free with absolutely no irritants. The pads are made with corn fibre and come with paper disposal bags, to reduce after-use plastic pollution.

100% Organic Cotton Tampons: Some women are comfortable using a tampon and that’s completely fine too. Yet, we need to be mindful of what goes inside our body. Tampons tend to stay logged in our private areas for hours and hence, they need to be clear of synthetic substances that may cause harm and infection. Carmesi’s Tampons are made with 100% organic cotton with no chlorine, dioxins, or pesticides. All components of Carmesi Tampons, from its absorbent core, to the cover and the string are made of organic cotton, and are biodegradable and have FDA approval. They are available in different sizes to cater to individual needs.

The environmental benefits of our products create an applaudable impact in curbing waste generation on an individual level. With that in mind, let’s continue our dream to attain a more sustainable planet, one red revolution at a time.
